Gerrit Rietveld first sketched his crate furniture designs in 1934. Originally crafted from inexpensive wood, the series aimed to offer affordable, functional pieces. Rietveld personally constructed the furniture, cutting the wood and assembling the planks with simple screws. This method resulted in the distinctive rigid proportions and angled backrest. The collection was later reissued by Metz & Co and Cassina under the name “Weekend Furniture.”
